Countries without neighbours, and those with only one
38 of the 195 countries share no land border with any other country, and 18 share one with exactly one country. Here are both lists, worked out from Natural Earth's boundary lines.1

Living on an island does not always mean having no neighbour. Some islands are shared by two countries: Ireland and the United Kingdom, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, and Timor-Leste and Indonesia.1
Exactly one neighbour
18 countries have a land border with just one other country.1
Two pairs are each other's only neighbour: Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and Ireland and the United Kingdom. Lesotho lies entirely inside South Africa.3 San Marino and Vatican City both border only Italy, and Monaco borders only France.1
The most neighbours
At the other end, China and Russia each border 14 countries.1 Every country, ranked by its number of neighbours, is in the full list.
